Working with the Guided Navigation Settings page section

Reference: Working with the Guided Navigation Settings page section

Important note for developers and shop owners who use bespoke templates:

1. This functionality is only available for templates that have the generic template version id=9 or greater. Please see Attraqt Product Search: Standardizing product data for a guided navigation for more information on the generic template version.
2. If needed, default dimensions of pictograms (the 'Pictogram' display type) can be changed in the config.xml file.

Section Location

The Guided Navigation Settings page section can be placed in the left hand column of the Middle Part of the page layout. This section can only be added to the Product Search Results (it is present by default on site accounts to which a standard template is applied), Category and Brand pages. The Guided Navigation Settings page section cannot be removed from the Product Search Results page.

To add the Guided Navigation Settings page section to a page, in the Website Editor click on Page Sections to expand the list of available page section, find the section, drag and drop it to the page.

Section Customisation

Once the section is added to a page, it can be edited. To edit the section, click on the 'pencil' icon.

Default settings are:

Search filters by Category, Brand and Price are configured by default.

You can also configure search filters by the following fields:

Product Weight
Product Custom Attribute Values (only if your products have custom attributes )
Product Choice List Option Values (only if your products have choice list options )

See also Filtering Products by Price/Weight

Search parameters

Keyword Search Filter Label: this label will indicate the search keyword in the 'You have searched by' section
Search Threshold: a value (defined in %) that determines how strict search results should be, it affects the number of products returned to the customer - higher value returns less number of search results.

See Configuring Search Threshold for more details on Search Threshold.

Filter parameters

Filter Label: this is a filter name that will be visible to the customer. It will also appear under the 'You have searched by' section after the filter has been applied by the customer
Filter Type: Price, Brand, Category, Weight, Custom Attribute, Product Option.
Display Type: defines how filter values will be displayed. Available types: Text (a list of possible values), Input Box (an input box) and Pictogram (a list of possible values presented as icons). The following rules apply to define available Display Type based on the Filter type:

Pictogram: Brand, Custom Attribute, Product Option
Text: Brand, Custom Attribute, Product Option, Category, Price, Weight
Input Box: Brand, Custom Attribute, Product Option

See also Product Search: Working with Pictograms

Display Max and 2 input fields with predefined 'view more' and 'view less' values: available for Text filter types only; define the number of filter values that will be displayed. ‘view more’ will appear when the number of options in a filter exceeds the Display Max value. ‘view less’ will appear at the end of options list when 'view more' button has been clicked.
Allow Multiple Selection: available for the Text (except for the Price and Weight filter types) and Pictogram display types; defines whether it is possible for a customer to filter products by multiple filter values or not.
A grid with ranges: available for the Price and Weight filter types.
Attribute Name: available for the Custom Attribute filter type only; the drop down contains the list of all custom attributes present in the shop.
Option Name: available for the Product Option filter type only; the drop down contains the list of all choice list options present in the shop.
Upload Pictograms: available for the Pictogram display type.

There is no limitation on a number of filters that can be defined per shop however PowaWEB recommends to define no more than 5-7 filters to appear in the guided navigation section at a time. For example, a shop can have as many as 50 filters configured and only 7 will appear on the various category/brand landing pages, depending on product data. This is because if no search results (products) are found for a specific filter, it won’t be displayed on the front end.

Section Display Online

On the front end the Guided Navigation Settings page section consists of the 'You have searched by' section and sections containing filter values.

Search keyword and all applied filters are displayed under the 'You have searched by' title. All available filters are displayed under this section.

Example 1: A keyword search, the search keyword is 'barbie'.

If a single-selection filter is applied, corresponding section will be hidden, the selected filter value will be moved to the 'You have searched by' section. Once the applied filter is removed from the 'You have searched by' section, it will reappear as a separate section.
If a multi-selection filter is applied, corresponding section will stay, the selected filter value will be moved to the 'You have searched by' section.

Example 2: A keyword search, the search keyword is 'barbie'; applied filters: Price and Brand

Filtering options are ordered by the number of records that correspond to each option in descending order apart from filters that have intervals (price/weight). Intervals are always displayed in ascending order.
For a product custom attribute/option list, the filtering options will correspond to custom attribute/option list values.

If a custom attribute field contains a list of comma separated values, they will be indexed as separate values. For example, “blue, white, red” will be indexed as 3 separate values (blue, white and red) and not as one string. This affects the list of available options returned for a filter during the search. Please note, each value in a comma separated list should not exceed 200 characters for it to be indexed for search.

If a product option/attribute has been renamed or deleted after a corresponding filter for it has been set up, the filter will be automatically hidden from the guided navigation settings dialog window and it will be permanently deleted after the ‘Done’ button is clicked to save the changes.

See Attraqt Product Search for additional information and recommendations.

Guided Navigation vs Category/Brand Menu

The Guided navigation section can be used instead of standard Category Menu and Brand Menu sections or it may sit above/beneath it anywhere in the left container. PowaWEB recommends to position it at the top of the left container.

If a filter by category/brand is configured and the Guided navigation section is added to the category/brand page, the category/brand landing page will be displayed as if the customer has already filtered by a category/brand:

You have searched by:
Brand/Category:
[Value]

PowaWEB recommends to remove the Brand Menu section if the filter by Brand is configured and the Guided navigation section is added to the category/brand landing page(s).

Any search filter can be removed by the customer except in the event that it is the last remaining filter applied to the search results.  Filters can be removed with a click of a button, which starts a new search with the updated list of filters. For example:
1.    Customer searches for "dress"
2.    Customer refines by Price £20-£30
3.    Customer removes a keyword filter "dress"
4.    All products on the shop with price £20-£30 are returned
